Welcome! Check out our kick-off event activity!

 Hello Families!

We're excited to start reading together with all of you. Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo is a fun book that is perfect for a spring read.

Take your book to the park to enjoy fresh air & a great story!

During tonight's event, we'll be talking all about heroes & superheroes because Ulysses, an adorable squirrel with superpowers in our book, has inspired us to create our own superhero alter egos.

As you starting reading Flora & Ulysses, you will see that they are a dynamic duo. Using the novel as inspiration, create your own mini story about yourself as a superhero and who your side-kick will be, just like Incandesto and Dolores! You can simply write out your story or take it one step further and use your story in a comic strip (use the template provided or make your own)!

Answer the questions below in order to get your story going:

  • What is your real name?
  • What is your superhero name?
  • What does your “regular” life look like? (what is going on when you are not being a superhero?)
  • What are your powers?
  • How did you get your powers?
  • What characteristics do you have that make you a good superhero? (ex: honest, caring, brave, strong, serious, funny, quiet, loud, smart, etc.)
  • Who is your sidekick? What animal are they?
  • What is your sidekick’s name?
  • What powers do they have? Or no powers?
  • What makes them a good sidekick?
  • What makes a good friend? Is your sidekick your best friend?
  • What forces of evil do you fight?
  • Who is your arch-nemesis? What do they look like?
  • What is the setting?
  • What problem will you solve?
  • How will your story end? Do you win?

Answer these questions in order to design yourself as a superhero and create your own side-kick.

Draft out your story on a piece of paper. What will be the beginning, the middle, and end of your story? You can also add drawings of your characters if you would like.

Optional (but very fun!):

Use the comic strip template (or your own design) to write and draw out your story just how we see the comic panels in Flora & Ulysses. Make sure your comic strip answers the questions above through your storytelling and drawings.
